Mike Smalley is a graduate of Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. He played Offensive Line on the last team from Wakefield to make it to the VHSL Regional Playoffs in 1986. He also represented Wakefield at the VHSL State Track Meet in the Shot Put Event in 1987.

Mike went on to the University of Pittsburgh to a team that achieved an overall record of 9-2 with wins over Penn State and Notre Dame on their way to the Blue Bonnet Bowl played in Houston, Texas in 1988.

Mike served as the Defensive Line Coach at George Mason from 1994 to 1997 before being named Defensive Coordinator in 1998 where he stayed until 2002. He pursued other coaching interests before returning to George Mason as the Offensive Line Coach from 2005 to present.

He has coached High School Football at Wakefield, Radford and Washington-Lee High Schools as well as High School Track and Field at Wakefield, Radford and West Potomac. Mike is currently coaching Track and Field at Yorktown High School where he is also a Physical Education Instructor. Mike is a proud member of the Gila River Indian Community which is the Pima Tribe, located just outside Phoenix, Arizona.
