Matt Dyson is beginning his
seventh season as head coach of football at George Mason University. He
and his staff have been working hard to continue the great tradition of
Mason football established by Dr. Joseph Pascale since the team's
development in 1993. Dyson has been a member of the staff for the past
six seasons coaching multiple positions on the defensive side of the
ball. This season, he will work as the defensive coordinator. He has
produced many all conference players and looks to this year's veterans
to help the young and talented newcomers. He looks forward to a great
year on the field and a strong year of recruiting to challenge higher
level teams next year.
Coach Dyson did his undergraduate studies at the University of
Michigan, where he earned a B.A. in Sports Management and
Communications. He was also a member of the football team, which won
the Big Ten Championship three times during the five years that Coach
Dyson was with the team. As a four-year starter for the University of
Michigan Wolverines, he was twice selected to the All Big-Ten
Conference First Team and once to the Second Team. In 1992, on the way
to winning a Rose Bowl rematch versus the University of Washington, he
achieved All-American status. In 1994, he was selected as the Defensive
MVP of the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, California. In 1995, the Oakland
Raiders drafted him in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. He was twice
selected Rookie of the Week and once named Most Likely to Excel. He
played two years for the Raiders before retiring due to injury.
Before joining the coaching staff at George Mason University, Coach
Dyson was the defensive and offensive line coach, as well as the
assistant defensive coordinator for the Falls Church High School
Football team in Falls Church, Virginia. For the past eight years,
Coach Dyson has been the head coach of the Falls Church Track and Field
Team.
Coach Dyson grew up in Southern Maryland. At La Plata High School, he
was a four-sport standout athlete in football, basketball, soccer, and
track and field. He played the running back and defensive end positions
on the football team and garnered All-American honors. He was a four
year all conference first team player in both basketball and track and
field. Coach Dyson lives in Manassas, Virginia with his wife, Sara and
his new daughter Mackenzie. He continues to coach track and field at
Falls Church High School and conducts speed training and conditioning
sessions during the off-season for the George Mason Football Team. |
